Lake Funda is the largest body of water filling the former volcanic caldera on the island of Flores. Just next to Lagoa Funda you will also find the smaller and considerably less photogenic caldera filled by Lagoa Rasa.
Prices and availability of accommodation on Flores
Lagoa Funda is situated at 400 metres above sea level and is surrounded by steep slopes partly covered with forests and partly with sparse vegetation.
The water level is tinted green due to the shallow water and the strong influence of algae.
There is no safe way to reach the surface of the water and it is certainly not possible to swim here. The view over the lake, however, will definitely impress you and it is worth the trip from anywhere on the island.
Opposite the wooden terrace with a view across the road is the small and shallow Lagoa Rasa.
How to get there
Lagoa Funda lies in the uninhabited central part of the island, but is easily accessible by car.
There is a tarmac road around the lakes, which turns off the main road about 2km west of Lajes and continues onto another main road through the centre of the island, which it joins near Lagoa Negra.
The road is one of the least good roads on Flores, but it is passable for all types of cars without any problems.
There is no marked footpath around the lakes Funda and Rasa.
