The most visited of all the volcanic lakes, of which there are several on the plateau of central Flores, are two lakes located right next to each other: Lagoa Negra and Lagoa Comprida.
Prices and availability of accommodation on Flores
The two lagoons, remnants of volcanic craters, are close together and separated by a strip of cliff less than 100 metres wide.
Lagoa Negra has an almost perfect circular shape, while Lagoa Comprida is elongated and its shores are more rugged.
How to get to the viewpoint
Right between the lakes there is a viewpoint from where both lagoons can be seen beautifully.
The viewpoint is well marked from the main road that runs down the middle of the island. Continue by car along the gravel road for approximately 300 metres. From the car park to the viewpoint it is only 150 metres and even untrained hikers can make the journey.
Start of the PR3FLO route
At the parking lot below the viewpoint is one of the ends of a challenging, but at the same time one of the most beautiful hiking trails on the island marked as PR3FLO.
It leads first past several lagoons on the plateau, then along the edge of cliffs with breathtaking views, and finally steeply down to the village of Faja Grande.
As there is no other way to get to this end than by car, you always have to return the same way and therefore steeply uphill. It is therefore a full day trip. The route is described more in the chapter Activities.
