The lighthouse on the second northernmost cape of the island, Ponta do Albarnaz, is a popular tourist destination during road-trips around Flores.
Prices and availability of accommodation on Flores
The lighthouse can be reached by car on a comfortable asphalt road.
The lighthouse itself is a military facility and you cannot enter it, but you can take pictures of the structure without any restrictions.
The lighthouse stands in an extremely photogenic location with jagged and very high cliffs that contrast sharply with the peaceful landscape of lush green meadows.
You can walk up to 1 km from the lighthouse along the cliff edge.
By car, you can continue along the concrete road from the lighthouse further into the mountains to the highest mountain on the island and enjoy incredible views of the open countryside.
Starting point for the PR1FLO route
The crossroads about 200 metres from the lighthouse is a popular place to park your car when hiking the island's most beautiful trek - the walking route marked as PR1FLO.
The challenging path leads through an extremely photogenic area along the edge of the cliffs to the village of Faja Grande. If you go by car, you will have to return by the same route, so expect about 8 hours of travel time.
