The Cascata do Poço do Bacalhau is the most accessible waterfall and forms a beautiful landmark on the coast, close to the town of Fajã Grande.

The Bacalhau waterfall consists of a single spring falling from a perpendicular wall about 75 metres high into a small lake creating an almost fairytale-like setting. The flow of the stream that creates the waterfall is relatively weak and therefore in stronger winds the water from the waterfall is dispersed before it reaches the pool.
Enjoy a moment of tranquility
The always mowed lawn below the waterfall beckons you to sit or picnic during your travels along the west coast of the island.
Although Poço do Bacalhau is a famous spot, it's not very crowded and hidden from the hustle and bustle of the coastline behind terraced fields.
How to get to the waterfall
From the northern end of Fajã Grande, a landscaped walkway along the river branches off from the road heading to Ponta da Fajã and takes you directly below the waterfall.
This is a very short and relaxing walk that can be done by everyone. The path from the road below the waterfall is about 300 metres long and there are no uncomfortable or steep sections.
You can park your car at the side of the road near the start of the trail or in the parking lot at Fajã Grande, which is about 400 meters away.
