Ponta Ruiva is a hidden, unassuming village situated on the extremely steep pastures of the north-east coast of Flores.
Although the turn-off from the main road is signposted, the steep gradient of the road means that at first glance you might not think of going to Ponta Ruiva. However, you would be missing out!
Prices and availability of accommodation in Flores
Ponta Ruiva has about 50 permanent residents. There is no church, shop or restaurant. But the two-kilometre detour is definitely worth it for the breathtaking views.
From the observation deck, you can see the whole width of the east coast, the distant island of Corvo and the islet of Furado with its natural rock arch.
Ponta Ruiva lies on the long-distance hiking route GR01FLO, which winds along the entire east coast from Ponta Delgada to Santa Cruz das Flores.
