Daisho-in Temple

Daisho-in

The historic Daisho-in temple complex is located at the foot of the sacred Mount Misen and is one of the most important temples of Shingon Buddhism.

Daisho-in is situated in a picturesque wooded valley with a river, and within its grounds you will find gardens that are especially beautiful in November when the leaves on the trees turn colour.

The temple was built as early as 806 and the whole area contains many different buildings, paths and parks.

A popular trail among visitors and locals alike is through the garden of small statues of monks with red knitted caps.

These little caps refer to the god Jizo Bosatsu, who is considered the patron saint of all children in modern Japanese Buddhism. The god Jizo Bosatsu is usually depicted with a red headdress and red clothes.

Admission and opening hours

The entire temple grounds are open to the public every day from 10:00-17:00.

Admission is free.

How to get there

The temple is about a 15-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine. The hiking trail continues on to Mount Misen, which can be reached in about 1.5 hours.
