Populonia is one of the most famous Etruscan archaeological sites in Italy and is the main monument on the so-called "Etruscan coast".
The exceptionally well-preserved excavations of the Etruscan city are complemented by the monumental fortress of Populonia from more modern times.
The present-day village of Populonia, with its aforementioned fortress, dates back to the 15th century and stands on a hill just above the coastline, from where you can easily see all the way to the island of Elba.
Just below the village is an extensive archaeological site of an Etruscan town dating from around the 7th to 6th century BC. The most interesting are undoubtedly the rock tombs in the extensive local necropolis.
