Monteriggioni is a unique fortified medieval village and one of the most interesting places in Tuscany.
The village lies about 20 km north of Siena on a small hill and is entirely located behind massive stone walls.
Siena Conservation
The small village was founded in 1213 with one purpose: to defend the nearby city of Siena from raids from the then-hostile Florence.
Montereggioni was therefore originally just a massive fortress with 570 long walls guarded by 14 towers with a square plan. Inside the castle there were only simple buildings for soldiers and defenders.
The original 13th century fortifications have survived in their complete form to this day.
Visit Monteriggioni
The houses inside the ramparts have been restored to their original 13th-15th century appearance and are now home to around 50 permanent residents of Monteriggioni.
Here you will also find several restaurants, accommodation, shops or even an ATM.
A hiking trail runs around the perimeter of the walls. You can visit the castle every day at the following times:
- 9:00-13:30 a 14:00-19:00
- Admission costs 5 eur
