The Tuscan town of Montecatini Terme is one of Europe's most famous spa towns and has been listed by UNESCO as one of the Famous Spa Towns of Europe since 2021.
Montecatini Terme is a household name in Italy, known to everyone from Milan to Palermo, and is one of the most popular places for day trips.
Thermal springs
A total of 11 thermal sulphur springs spring up from depths of up to 80 metres in and around the city, 6 of which have proven curative properties. The spa is particularly suitable for the treatment of respiratory diseases, rheumatism and cardiovascular diseases.
In addition to the classic thermal springs, you can also take advantage of mud baths or massages.
Colonnade and spa buildings
Montecatini Terme was founded by Leopold I at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, but its greatest boom came between the 19th and 20th centuries, from which most of the spa complexes date.
Take a stroll along the magnificent central colonnade with its many art nouveau pavilions and neo-Gothic buildings and enjoy the stylish and elegant atmosphere of past centuries.
Entrance fees and prices
Of course, you can visit the spa without a medical indication, especially popular are the thermal pools (approx. 13 eur for 60 minutes) or a day ticket to the thermal pools including massages for 120 eur to 150 eur.
You can visit several spa complexes in the city, official information can be found on the website www.termemontecatini.it.
Accommodation
Of course, there are a large number of spa hotels, which themselves offer various thermal and therapeutic treatments for their guests. The prices of very high quality 4* hotels start at a great 48 eur per night in a 2-bed room.
We would recommend, for example 4* Hotel Manzoni Wellness&Spa or the 4* Grand Hotel Tetuccio.
How to get there
Montactini Terme is on the railway line connecting Florence with Lucca and the seaside towns of Viareggio and Pisa.
Only trains of the Italian state-owned railway Trenitalia run on the route, and you can find timetables and buy tickets on trenitalia.com.
Trains run roughly once an hour in both directions and you can also buy tickets for regional services at the station before departure. For example, a journey to Florence will cost you 5,80 eur.
There are 4 public transport bus lines around the city, tickets cost 1,50 eur and can be bought at any newsagent. Timetables can be found on the at-bus.it website.
