The Devil's Bridge is a popular destination for day trips from the nearby town of Lucca, but also from Pisa. The official name is Ponte della Maddalena, but more commonly referred to in tourist materials as Ponte del Diavolo.
It is one of the most accessible and also one of the best preserved medieval bridges in Tuscany.
The bridge is located near the towns of Borgo and Mozzano and crosses the Serchio River. It was built in the 11th century and became an important part of the Via Francigena leading from Rome and Florence to France.
The bridge was significantly restored in the 1300s and its early medieval appearance changed once more in the early 20th century, when the construction of the railway necessitated the addition of another bridge arch at the edge.
The bridge is free and open to pedestrians 24/7.
