Massa is a somewhat neglected town on the road between Pisa and the popular Cinque Terre area. It lies in the foothills of the Apuan Alps and a stone's throw from the endless beaches of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Castle of Malaspina

Massa is dominated like a crown by the majestic Castle of Malaspina, standing on a rocky promontory above the centre and against a backdrop of high mountains. The castle has towered over Massa since the 12th century, but has been razed several times over time, so that its present appearance dates back to the 17th century, when it served as a military fortress.

From the castle you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the sea in the distant background. Entrance costs 7,50 eur.

Historic centre

Massa itself has a small but charming historic centre. Walk from Piazza Martana through the narrow, typically Italian streets to the main square, Piazza degli Aranci, with its magnificent Doge's Palace.

How to get there

The fastest and most convenient transport is by train to Massa-Centro station, about 500 metres from the beach. Trenitalia's regional and long-distance services stop here; for timetables and to buy tickets online, visit trenitalia.com.
