The beautifully preserved medieval Fontebranda Baths can be found on the road across the valley between Siena Cathedral and St Dominic's Basilica.
This fountain served mainly as a reservoir for drinking water, which was piped several kilometres from the countryside to the roof of the baths, from which it was piped to the pools on the surface. A separate pool was then used for washing clothes.
The construction of the fountain dates from 1246 and is one of the typical examples of medieval Italian Gothic.
