Torre Velasca

Torre Velasca

The Velasca skyscraper is one of the symbols of Milan. Much hated and much loved, nothing in between. Milanese are divided into two camps, there is simply no neutral opinion on this controversial building.

A symbol of modern Milan

The building was built in 1956 as Italy's first ever skyscraper to exceed 100 metres, specifically climbing up to 106 metres. It is the only high-rise structure built within the original walls of Milan's historic centre and became a symbol of the then rapidly developing economic heart of Italy and the whole of southern Europe.

Its unmistakable architectural style resembles a mushroom shape with a wider top and a narrower base.

The architecture refers to the medieval fortified towers of Lombard-style fortresses, which also had a widened top section. In 2011, Torre Velasca was also placed under the protection of historic buildings due to its unique shape.

Entrance and how to get to the tower

Currently, the observation floors of the tower are not open to the public.

If you want to get a closer look at Torre Velasca, it is a 5-10 minute walk from Piazza del Duomo, or alternatively you can use the Missori metro station right next to the tower. The yellow M3 line runs through here.
