Lucca is located in a densely populated area of central Tuscany, about 35 km from Pisa Airport, 70 km from Florence Airport and 25 km from the seaside resort of Viareggio.

It can be reached by very frequent train and bus connections.

By train

The most convenient connection is by rail, with only the Italian state-owned Trenitalia railway running to Lucca, where you can find all the information you need (online ticket purchase, connection search, etc.) on the trenitalia.com website or on the Trenitalia mobile app (Google Play / App Store).

Lucca is practically only served by the Regionale and Regionale Veloce regional services, for which you don't need to buy tickets in advance. You can also buy them for the same price from a ticket machine or ticket office at the station. Just be sure to mark your ticket in the validator at the platform.

Take the train to Lucca from the following destinations:

  • Pisa - 1-2 trains per hour, 31 minutes and costs 3,60 eur, All trains stop at Pisa San Rossore station, which is about 300 metres from the Leaning Tower, in addition to Centrale station.
  • Florence - 2-3 connections per hour, 1.5 to 1.3 hours and standing 7,90 eur
  • Viareggio - 1-2 connections per hour, the journey takes 20 minutes and costs 3,60 eur

In Lucca, trains only stop at a single station, which is about 300 metres from St Martin's Cathedral, you can find it at this exact spot on the map.

By bus

However, buses are definitely relevant as well, offering frequent connections to nearby towns.

You can use the buses to the following destinations:

  • Florence - about once an hour, the journey takes an hour and 20 minutes and costs 7,60 eur, in the timetable, look for the DD line (click on the "Regionali" box)
  • Pisa and Pisa airport - 1-2x connections per hour, the journey takes 50-60 minutes and costs 3,50 eur, look for the E3 line in the timetable (click on the "Lucca Extraurbano" box). The bus stops directly at Piazza dei Miracoli, in the centre and at the airport terminal

Tickets can be bought at the ticket office at the bus station or on the At-Bus mobile app.

The main bus station can be found at Piazzale Verdi (see map) by the eastern gate of the walls.

By car
