Neptune's Fountain

Neptune's Fountain

Bartolomeo Ammannati's work of 1565 is one of the landmarks of the Piazza della Signoria. In front of the fountain, the year 1498 is carved into the pavement. This is not the date of the fountain's foundation stone, but a commemoration of the burning of the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola for criticising the dissolute life of the nobility.

The fountain is a monumental work of art.

It is dominated by a 5 meter high statue of Neptune in white marble surrounded by 7 other bronze statues from Greek and Roman mythology.

Tip! The square is home to one of Florence's most famous cafes , the Rivoire. The café is famous for its chocolate production, started in 1872 by Enrico Rivoire. Today, you can still enjoy traditional chocolate desserts and delicious coffee or buy chocolate truffles made according to old recipes to take home.
