Cinque Terre is located in the north of Italy in the province of Liguria. There is no airport directly in the area, but all the villages on the coast are well served by regional and long-distance trains.
By air
By Italian standards, Cinque Terre is in a somewhat remote area with no airport, but there's no need to worry. All villages can be reached by train from the nearest airports within two hours.
What are the nearest airports to Cinque Terre?
- Airport Genova GOA - 110 km, limited number of flights, especially from Western Europe
- Airport Pisa PSA - 112 km, a very wide network of routes all over Europe, in particular Ryanair offers very cheap flights to dozens of destinations
To get to Cinque Terre you can also use the large Malpensa MXP airport in Milan, around 300 km away and well connected by rail.

By train
The Cinque Terre area is best and by far the fastest accessible by rail.
Trains stop in all 5 towns on the Cinque Terre and despite the very rugged coastline, connections are fast - the line runs through tunnels most of the time.
The only trains that pass through the Cinque Terre are those of the state-owned carrier Trenitalia. Tickets for local services (Regionale or Regionale Veloce) can be bought before departure at the ticket office or at the ticket machine located at each station. In this case, you must always mark the ticket in the validator on the platform. The conductor never sells tickets.
If you are coming here on the faster InterCity services, it is preferable to buy your ticket online at least 3 weeks in advance. For tickets, timetables and connection searches, visit trenitalia.com or the Trenitalia mobile app (Google Play / App Store).
Examples of connections to Cinque Terre:
- from Pisa - always change at La Spezia Centrale station, price from 9,20 eur, from 15,45 eur in the summer season
- from Milan - direct connections to Monterosso only, price from 12 eur, from 20 eur in the summer season
By car
All the villages can be reached by narrow winding roads, but they don't take very long to drive along. About 10-15 km inland from the coast, the A12 motorway passes between Pisa and Genoa.
There are public car parks above each of the villages with prices around 2 eur per hour or 20 eur per day. Non-residents are not allowed to enter the centres of the villages.
