Plunyon Kalikuning

Plynuon Kalikuning

Head to the foot of Merapi volcano and walk across the Kalikuning hiking bridge, which leads through the valley of the same name with its many man-made water cascades.

A short walk of about 1.5 km through a mountain valley with dense forests is a very pleasant diversion to Yogyakarta's bustling city and historical sites.

The bridge is located in the village of Kaliurang, but you can't get there on foot. Access to the Kalikuning Valley is only from the south in the direction of Jogja.

Entrance fees and opening hours

There is an entrance fee to enter the bridge and the valley. It is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm every day except Mondays.

  • 10 000 idr - weekends
  • 5 000 idr - weekdays

How to get there

The entrance to the Kalikuning Valley can only be reached by car or motorbike. No form of public transport is available here.

We recommend using the Grab/Gojek mobile apps, which work well in this area.

To get to the centre of Yogyakarta you will pay approximately 170 000 idr.

You can save considerably by taking bus line 12 from the Condogcatur terminal (or the "Sardjito" stop where you change to lines 3A/3B in the direction of the centre) to the Pakem terminus.

On Line 12 buses, you cannot pay with cash, but only with electronic cards (see Transport section) and the ticket costs 3 600 idr.

From the Pakem terminal take Grab/Gojek for about 35 000 idr.

Kaliurang tourist town

Kaliurang is a very touristy village, where most of the off-road ATV and jeep tours start, called the Lava Tour Merapi (see the Activities chapter for more). However, a visit to the centre of Kaliurang village is currently not highly recommended.

At the Tlogo Putri pond in Kaliurang there is an entrance to the Merapi National Park (foreigners pay 175 000 idr), but only a small waterfall is accessible, which is definitely not worth the relatively high price.

All hiking trails in the national park are closed due to the constant volcanic activity of Merapi.
