Rinca Island

Rinca Island, Komodo Islands, Indonesia

Rinca is the second, less famous island where the Komodo crow can be seen in the wild. In addition to reptiles, wild pigs, deer and many species of birds can also be seen on the islands. The beautiful views of the surrounding sea and islets should also be mentioned.

On Rinca Island, there are three tours to choose from. The circuits vary in length and also in the likelihood of encountering Komodo dragons.

Rinca Island vs. Komodo Island

If you want to experience the Komodo dragon for yourself, you need to visit one of the two largest islands in the Komodo archipelago. Which one to choose and what are the differences between them?

Both islands offer three hiking trails that you can follow with a local ranger. You can choose between a short, medium and long circuit. You also have a fairly high chance of spotting ravens on both islands.

Rinca Island is closer to the mainland, making it a better stop if you're only planning a day trip. The nature there is also wilder and the panoramas a bit more beautiful. In theory, there are also fewer tourists on Rinca Island. On the other hand, there is a higher fee to visit Rinca.

Komodo, on the other hand, is the larger of the two islands and offers a higher chance of encountering fauna other than the varanians. The price of admission is slightly lower.

In general, however, the likelihood of spotting a Komodo varan is similar on both islands, so feel free to choose the one that is part of your preferred organized trip. You won't be disappointed with either island.
