The second oldest church, preserved in almost its original form, can be found inside the courtyard of one of the government buildings of the Largo complex.

The church was built in the late antique period in the 4th century AD and was part of the ancient city of Serdica.

Ancient church surrounded by socialism

The small Romanesque rotunda of St George, built of red brick, contrasts sharply with the surrounding massive buildings built in the style of socialist classicism.

The church is approached through one of two passages through the buildings, on the north side from Independence Square and on the south side from Saborna Street.

The church serves the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and is still an active place of worship.

Admission and opening hours

For the tourist public the church is open every day from 8:00-19:30.

Inside you will see a surprisingly large space under a cylindrical dome richly decorated with chandeliers and icons. Unfortunately, it is forbidden to take photos inside.
