Right in the centre of the city at Serdika metro station, three monumental government buildings around Independence Square catch your eye.

The complex consists of a total of three buildings built in the 1950s in the then typical style of socialist classicism. The whole complex of three buildings and the square is called Largo.

Today it is one of the most typical surviving examples of Socialist Classicism in the European Union and one of the main landmarks of Sofia.

The buildings of the Largo complex

All three main buildings are still used for governmental purposes and therefore one cannot normally visit their interiors. However, some parts are allocated to private institutions and you can of course have an unrestricted look inside them.

  • The former central building of the Bulgarian Communist Party - the dominant feature of the square and the tallest building of the Largo complex - now serves the Bulgarian National Assembly, i.e. the Parliament.
  • Council of Ministers and TSUM department store - the building on the north side of the square
  • Presidential Office, several ministries and a luxury hotel Sofia Balkan Palace ***** - building on the south side of the square
