Head to the edge of the Simmering district during your Vienna tour, where you can admire the sensitive renovation of a former industrial site that is now used for housing and commercial services.

These are four enormous gasometers, which were built between 1896 and 1899 during Vienna's booming development. When gas was replaced by natural gas in the 1980s, the tanks began to deteriorate.

Renovation and conversion to housing

In 1995, a major conversion of the gas tanks to civilian use began. Each of the four "Gasometers" was renovated to a different architect's design, but all of them are mostly used for normal housing and commercial purposes in the form of shops or offices.

The dominant feature of the new complex is the roughly 85-metre-high extension to Gasometer B, which exceeds the others by almost 20 metres.
