Buses to Vienna are a very common form of transport, especially on international routes.

On which routes do buses run from Vienna and where to buy tickets?

On the route to Vienna, two carriers dominate - Regiojet and Flixbus, which provide more than 95% of all connections. Ticket prices are flexible and vary considerably depending on the availability of a particular service.

Czech Republic

Bus connections to the Czech Republic are very frequent and more frequent than the train to Prague and Brno.

In addition, journey times are comparable to the train.

Prague - Vienna (centre and airport)

The most frequent connection is from Prague, with buses running at least once an hour on average, with a few connections at night.

  • Price to the city centre - 0 eur 4 eur , depending on availability of the connection can go up and over 24 eur
  • Price to the airport - from 14 eur for Flixbus, 24 eur for Regiojet
  • Travel time - 4 to 4:40 hours depending on the specific service

The route is operated by Regiojet and Flixbus, the prices are very similar, however, there may be different promotional tickets so it is always a good idea to check both booking systems.

  • Regiojet - in Prague always departs from the Florenc bus station, in Vienna it stops at the main train station on Südtiroler Platz (see map)
  • Flixbus - in Prague they stop at Florenc and in front of the main station, but some night services leave from Roztyly metro station. In Vienna, they stop at the Erdberg metro station (see map)

At Vienna Airport, all international services stop right outside the terminal.

Brno - Vienna (city centre and airport)

The busiest connection is on the route from Brno, where again both Regiojet and Flixbus operate, cumulatively at least once per hour, many Regiojet connections from Vienna city centre also continue directly to Vienna airport, while Flixbus continues to the airport with only 2 connections per day.

In addition, there are still Gepard Express buses from the airport.

  • Price to the city centre - from 5 eur for Flixbus, from 7 eur for Regiojet
  • Price to the airport - from 9 eur for Flixbus, 14 eur for Regiojet
  • Travel time - 2 hours

Regiojet and Flixbus from Brno always leave at the bus station in front of the Grand Hotel. In central Vienna, Regiojet stops at the main train station on Südtiroler Platz (see map), while Flixbus stops at Erdberg metro station (see map).

Ostrava, Olomouc - Vienna (centre and airport)

Direct buses without a change in Brno also run from Ostrava via Olomouc and are again operated by both Regiojet and Flixbus. The service runs 1-2 times a day, with most buses stopping at Vienna Airport in addition to Vienna city centre.

  • Price - from 11 eur for Flixbus, from 13 eur for Regiojet
  • Travel time - 4.5 hours

The following Czech destinations can be reached by bus from Vienna without changing trains:

  • Hradec Králové - 1x daily
  • Litomyšl - 1x daily

  • Liberec - 1x daily

Slovakia

Due to competition from 3 different carriers, the buses to Bratislava are significantly more frequent than the train and also stop in Vienna and Bratislava at several different locations.

Bratislava - Vienna (city centre and airport)

The bus connection between Bratislava and Vienna is one of the busiest international routes in Europe. On this route, buses run on average 2-3 times per hour and there are 3 different companies competing: Regiojet, Flixbus and Slovak Lines.

  • Price - from 5 eur for Flixbus and 7,90 eur for Regiojet and Slovak Lines respectively
  • Travel time - 45 to 60 minutes

However, there are frequent ticket promotions for 1 eur for both Regiojet and Slovak Lines.

Žilina - Trenčín - Vienna

Direct buses run up to 5 times a day from the centre of Vienna (main station or Erdberg) via Vienna and Trenčín airports to Žilina.

Hungary

Bus routes from Vienna mainly go to Budapest, some of which also stop in Györ.

Buses run on average once every 90 minutes and depart from the main train station or Erdberg station.

Italy

All regular bus routes from Vienna to Italy can be purchased on flixbus.com.

The service is not very frequent and usually runs 1-3 times a day:

  • Venice - from 35 eur

Slovenia

To Slovenia, direct connections are more frequent than trains, where you usually have to change trains in Graz or Villach.

There are no direct trains from Vienna to Croatia, but the bus service is frequent and you can use it to several destinations.

  • Split - departs 1x daily, prices from 40 eur
