The place is popular for picnics and comfortable walks along the river. In fact, the sequoia forest has the advantage over the surrounding native rainforest in the absence of undergrowth, making it very comfortable to walk among the trees.
Where did the redwoods in the Great Otways come from?
California redwoods were planted here by local farmers as an experimental forest in 1936.
As redwoods can live up to 3,000 years, the local forest is still very young and although the trees are currently around 20 metres tall, they can actually grow to 80-100 metres!
Stop by Hopetoun Falls
Just under 5 minutes' drive towards Beech Forest, don't miss the short stop at pretty Hopetoun Falls.
The walking trail from the parking lot is about 500 yards long and the entire visit won't take you more than 30 minutes.
How to get there
You'll find the forest of redwoods on Bins Road connecting Apollo Bay and Beech Forest. You can also drive along this road to places such as Otway Fly Treetop Adventures.
Although the road is not paved and Google Maps, for example, does not list it in its navigation, it is passable without problems for all types of cars, even in the rain.
