Lake Burley Griffin

Beach by the lake

The lake, named after Canberra's chief architect, urban designer and planner, the American architect Walter Burley Griffin, is one of the main city-forming features.

The artificial lake was built on the Molonglo River and separates the centre with residential and commercial complexes around 'City Hill' from the government and parliamentary part of Canberra around 'Capital Hill'.

The lake was built in 1963, has a length of 11 km and a maximum width of about 1,200 metres. Its average depth is only 4 metres.

The promenade and sandy beaches

A shared footpath for walkers and cyclists winds almost the entire circumference of Lake Burley Griffin, which is lined with parks and landscaped green meadows.

Walking along the lake is extremely popular with locals and tourists alike. Indeed, there are many sights and attractions around the lake and it is easily accessible from both main parts of Canberra.

On the north side (near the central part of the city) you can take advantage of the beautiful and well-maintained sandy Acton Beach, which is accessible for free 24/7.

Swimming in the lake is safe and the entry into the clear water is very gradual.

The beach is about 10 minutes walk from City Hill, see exact location on map.
