Where to stay in Canberra

In this section you will discover our tips for places to stay in Canberra. Check out the best hotels in Canberra that we can also personally recommend.
Where to stay - Canberra
The capital of Australia is small and tourist attractions are concentrated in a relatively small area around the centre.
There are basically two main areas to stay in Canberra.
City – centrum
The city centre is north of Lake Burley Griffin in the surrounding hills of "City Hill".
Although there are not many tourist attractions right in the centre, this is the best place to stay. There are many shops, restaurants, services and most bus routes cross here.
Taxi and Uber access is also great.
Regular rates at international chain hotels are around 200 aud per night. We would recommend these hotels:
Capital Hill – parlament
On the south shore of the lake is the government and cultural quarter with many institutions, embassies, as well as museums and galleries.
There are not as many shopping options or restaurants, but on the other hand you will find very good quality hotels and a quiet environment during the night.
Hotels near stations and airports
If you're leaving Canberra early in the morning, you may be better off staying in a hotel right by a station or airport due to poorer public transport accessibility and possibly longer Uber wait times, especially on Sundays.
- Novotel Canberra **** - near the long-distance bus station in the city centre
- Vibe Hotel Canberra **** - near the airport
- Ramada Diplomat Canberra **** - near a railway station
Hotel prices and when to book
Typical rates at a well-rated 4-star hotel are between 200 aud and 270 aud per night in a double room.
As Canberra is not a very touristy city, prices are not seasonal and are kept at a similar level throughout the year.
It is very common for prices to decrease as the date of travel approaches, as hotels do not always fill to capacity.
It is recommended to book your hotel 2-3 months in advance with the option to cancel for free and keep checking for price reductions.
