Black Mountain is a famous landmark (812 m above sea level) with a prominent television transmitter at its summit.

The mountain is one of the most diverse natural areas in Canberra. Its slopes are covered with native bush, which is home to over 100 species of birds and over 500 species of plants.

Telstra Tower observation deck

The iconic Telstra Tower, over 190 metres tall, is one of Canberra's most iconic structures and stands just below the summit of Black Mountain.

Inside the transmitter is a popular viewing platform on two indoor and one outdoor level.

Telstra Tower is currently undergoing extensive renovations and is closed to the public. The anticipated opening date is mid-2026 and you can follow updates at telstra.com.au/telstra-tower.

Hiking

Black Mountain is an extremely popular destination for hikers and locals alike, and it tends to get quite crowded, especially on weekends.

A public road with a large free car park leads up to the summit.

The main hiking trail leads from the Australian National Botanic Gardens and is 3 km one way with an elevation gain of 240 metres, see route map.
