If you will be staying in Taiwan for more than 1 day and plan to travel by public transport, be sure to buy an "EasyCard" transport card.

EasyCard - price and where to buy

EasyCard can be used in all cities in Taiwan for public and regional transport. The card can also be used to pay at some supermarkets or 7-Eleven or FamilyMart mini-markets.

Official website: easycard.com.tw.

The card works on the basis of credit, which you load onto the card in any amount when you make a purchase and can be reloaded at any time at many locations.

When travelling on the underground or buses, you just need to hold the card up to a reader or turnstile and the appropriate fare amount is automatically deducted. So you don't always have to search for cash and see if you can pay by card (you usually can't).

The card costs 100 TWD, but this is just a deposit that you will get back if you return the card when you leave Taiwan. When you buy the card you must top up a certain amount of money at once, to get started we recommend 300 twd to 500 twd.

At all metro stations you will also encounter machines selling the "TPASS" card which is however mainly for regular commuters and is only issued in a 1 month version.

Sales points at the airport

The EasyCard can be purchased at several locations.

  • Cash desk at the metro station - cash and credit card payment
  • Vending machines at the metro station - cash only
  • 7-Eleven minimarkets (public area of both terminals) - cash and credit card payment

Metro "Wenhu Line"

The easiest transport to downtown Taipei is the brown metro line named "Wenhu Line".

The "Songshan Airport" station is directly in front of the airport and exits to both the domestic and international terminals.

Direct subway access from the airport takes you, for example, to the Taipei Zoo or to the lower station of the tourist cable car to Mount Maokong.

If you're heading to other parts of Taipei, take advantage of the dense network of other metro lines. The transfers are well signposted and you don't go through turnstiles during the transfers.

  • Central Railway Station - transfer at "Zhongxiao Fuxing" station to the blue "Bannan Line"
  • Taipei 101 Skyscraper - transfer at "Daa" station to the red "Tamsui-Xinyi Line"

Official information, subway maps and current fares can be found on the website: english.metro.taipei.

  • Travel time - 15 to 30 minutes depending on destination
  • Frequency - 15 minutes
  • Last train from the airport - 0:27
  • First train to the airport (from Daan station) - 6:01

Tickets and prices

You can purchase individual tickets (tokens) or use the EasyCard at the ticket machine before entering the platform. The fare is the same in both cases. Only cash can be paid at the ticket machine.

You enter the platform through the turnstiles, where you attach a token or EasyCard to the reader. Repeat the same procedure when leaving the station, so keep the token for the entire journey!

You can find prices from Songshan Airport to all metro stations throughout Taipei clearly on the website: web.metro.taipei/ticket.

Prices are always in $5 increments from NT$20 to NT$55.

  • 20 TWD - e.g. Zhongxiao Fuxing or Daan station
  • 25 TWD - e.g. Taipei 101, Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall or main train station
  • 35 TWD - e.g. Taipei Zoo

You can also buy day or multi-day tickets at the ticket office in each metro station if you don't want to buy EasyCard or individual tokens. Tickets are valid for the metro only and cannot be used on public transport buses. They are only worthwhile if you make more than 5 medium-length metro journeys per day.
