Getting from Newcastle Airport

Newcastle

The fastest way to get to Newcastle and Sunderland city centre is on the Green Line Metro for 4,50 gbp. Slightly cheaper, but significantly less frequent and longer, are the buses for 2 gbp.

You can also rent a car at the airport from a number of car hire companies.

Metro

The Green Line underground travels through Newcastle city centre and continues across the River Tyne to the coastal city of Sunderland.

The tube station is approximately 80 metres to the left of the terminal and is well signposted.

Official information can be found on the website: nexus.org.uk/metro. We describe our personal experiences of travelling around the city in our guide to Newcastle.

Fares

The airport is in Zone C, so you need tickets for 3 zones to get to the centre in Zone A. This is the most expensive fare, so even if you are travelling to Sunderland you will be buying a 3-zone ticket.

  • 3,40 gbp - Single fare via POP Card, but this card is only available via the mobile app which has a geoblock and can only be downloaded with a UK phone
  • 4,50 gbp - single ticket for 90 minutes from a ticket machine, not valid on buses
  • 5,90 gbp - all-day pass (valid on the Tube and Shields Ferry across the Tube network, not valid on buses)
  • 6,80 gbp - all day fares (valid on Tube, buses and Shields Ferry within the Tyne and Wear district, i.e. Newcastle and nearby towns)
  • 7,50 gbp - a day pass for the whole of Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham, valid on the Underground, buses and ferry and can only be bought from a ticket machine (select 'TNE Day Saver'). It is not valid on trains, but when travelling by bus you can also use this ticket to Hadrian's Wall or Durham.

There are several ways to pay the fare:

  • Via the Pop mobile app (Google Play / App Store) - currently only downloadable to UK registered phones.
  • A single 90-minute paper ticket from a ticket machine

For detailed fare information, visit the official website at nexus.org.uk/ticket-information.

Buses

On the main road approximately 150 metres to the left of the terminal (location on google.com/maps) you will find the X78 bus stop.

The line connects Ponteland with the centre of Newcastle (Eldon Square). Fares are cheaper than the underground and cost 2,50 gbp for 1 ride. You pay with your own contactless card at the driver.

The bus is a good option if you don't plan to travel more by public transport around the city and want to save as much as possible on your journey.

  • Price - 2,50 gbp (can also be used all day for all modes of transport for 6,80 gbp)
  • Frequency - 30 minutes
  • Travel time - 20 minutes
  • Timetable: nexus.org.uk/timetables/x78

There is also a 777 bus stopping directly outside the terminal running once every 60 minutes to Morpeth, north of Newcastle.

In the direction of Newcastle, the 777 terminates at Kingston Park Shops tube station in the northern suburbs and is therefore not suitable for travel into the city centre. The ticket costs 2 gbp and can be paid for with a contactless card at the driver.

Night transport

During the night, the 787 bus service will take you to the airport from Newcastle city centre.

The bus leaves from Newgate Street station and takes 30 minutes to the airport. You can buy your own ticket for 2 gbp with a contactless card from the driver.

For timetables, visit: nexus.org.uk/timetables/787.

Car Hire

To explore the countryside and coastline of East Anglia or southern Scotland, hire a car directly from the airport.

Car hire counters are right in the arrivals hall.

Many well-known and local brands operate at Newcastle Airport, and the lowest prices for weekly rentals start at 250 gbp.

Compare prices and book a car

You'll find car hire counters at domestic arrivals just outside the terminal exit towards the tube station.

Taxi / Uber

The official taxi service to the airport is provided by Arrow Cars with very high prices.

For a better price from the airport, the Uber mobile app offers a better deal, with which you can pay around 30 gbp.

Arrow Cars taxis stop right outside the terminal, while Uber stops near the bus stop about 50 metres from the airport building.

Train

There is no rail service to the airport and the nearest station is 8 miles away in Newcastle city centre, which can be reached by underground.

By train from Newcastle you can reach cities such as Middlesbrough, Edinburgh, Carlisle or Durham.

The best way to find timetables and online tickets is via Trainline.
