Benito Juarez Airport is located in the built-up area of Mexico City (9 km from the city centre) and is one of the three largest airports in Latin America.
AeroMexico, Interjet, VivaAerobus and Volaris are based here. The majority of traffic is to destinations in Mexico (often several times per hour to one city), the USA and neighbouring countries. Long-haul routes go to Europe, South America, the Middle East and East Asia.
Due to very limited to non-existent airport development opportunities and completely full capacity, the decision was made in 2014 to build a new Texcoco Airport. However, after 8 years, the project was halted and instead the former Santa Lucía military airport, now called Felipe Angeles NLU, became operational as an alternative to the congested Benito Juárez airport.
The Toluca TLC airport, 70 km away, can also be used for flights to Mexico City.
