EasyJet is one of Europe's largest airlines and it is therefore logical that, especially in the summer season, it can avoid flight delays or cancellations. In such cases, travellers are protected by EU Regulation 261, which guarantees passenger rights including possible compensation of up to 600 eur per person.
Compensation applies to all flights operated by easyJet.
Delayed flight with easyJet
For delayed flights, passenger rights start to apply for delays longer than 2 hours. In this case you are entitled to refreshments. Depending on the airport, the airline will provide a cash voucher to buy food or a voucher to a specific restaurant to buy a sandwich and water.
For delays of more than one hour overnight, you are also entitled to a hotel including meals and airport pick-up. However, such delays don't happen much with easyJet.
If you arrive at your destination with a delay of 3 hours or more, you can also claim financial compensation. However, be aware that the airline must be held responsible for the delay. This does not include extraordinary circumstances such as a strike by air traffic controllers, a strike by airport staff or the weather.
Distance | Delays | Compensation |
---|---|---|
up to 1 500 km | 3h+ | 250 eur |
1 500 to 3 500 km | 3h+ | 400 eur |
over 3 500 km | 3h+ | 300 eur |
over 3 500 km | 4h+ | 600 eur |
You can claim compensation directly from easyjet.com/claim/eu261 or from specialist agencies, who will take around a quarter of the compensation amount. This is because airlines will often not respond to your claim or will make excuses and offer reduced compensation.
Cancelled flight with easyJet
EasyJet doesn't cancel flights very often, and if it does, it's in advance of the 14 day limit where you are not covered by EU 261 passenger rights. In this case you are entitled to a refund or a free change to another flight.
However, if your flight is cancelled 13 days or less before departure, you will also be entitled to financial compensation of up to 600 eur depending on the distances shown in the table above.
