British Airways baggage

British Airways

British Airways always includes two carry-on bags - one standard cabin bag and one smaller bag that must fit under the seat in front of you.

The weight and number of checked-in bags depends on the fare class purchased.

Hand luggage

British Airways has the largest cabin baggage allowance of any airline - each hand luggage can weigh a maximum of 23kg.

In particular, the dimensions and number are checked:

  • 1 cabin bag - 56 x 45 x 25cm
  • 1 hand luggage or rucksack - 40 x 30 x 15cm

Checked baggage

Passengers travelling on the cheapest Economy Basic fare do not include checked baggage.

If you want to travel with checked baggage, it is always worth buying the more expensive Economy Plus fare straight away, as the price difference between the two fares is less than adding a checked bag to the Basic fare.

Checked baggage is mainly checked for weight and number of pieces:

Weight Number of pieces
Economy Basic 0 kg 0
Economy Plus 23 kg 1
Premium Economy 23 kg (each piece) 2
Business 32 kg (each piece) 2
First 32 kg (each piece) 3

However, the maximum dimensions of checked baggage are also set at 90 x 75 x 43cm.

Detailed information on baggage can be found at britishairways.com/baggage-essentials.

Additional baggage fees

You can always add additional baggage over and above the number allowed during the ticket purchase process or later in the 'Manage Booking' section.

The cost is always about half the price online compared to paying the fee at the airport.

  • 1st extra bag - 40 gbp for European flights / 60 gbp for long-haul flights
  • 2. extra baggage - 65 gbp for European flights / 65 gbp for long-haul flights
  • 3. extra baggage - 80 gbp for European flights / 130 gbp for long-haul flights

Luggage for children under 2 years of age

Infants under 2 years old are never allowed any checked baggage.

You can take a stroller or booster seat for a child under 2 years old on the plane (it will be taken just before boarding, you will usually pick it up as soon as you get off the plane) and 1 carry-on bag of 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm.
