Sea lovers will head to the mouth of the Douro River into the Atlantic Ocean, where three long piers jut out from the land to protect the river from the big waves.
On one of the piers, the shortest, stands the small, historic 19th-century Felgueiras Lighthouse, which only adds to the nautical atmosphere and the smell of the distant seas.
The lighthouse was built in 1886 in the form of a 10 metre high hexagonal tower of rough granite. The window frames and the canopy with the lantern are plastered with red paint.
The inside of the lighthouse is not open to the public, but you can always walk directly to the lighthouse on the approximately 100-metre long pier without paying a fee. The adjacent 3 times longer pier with a 5 m high buoy is also accessible.
In case of big waves, be very cautious. The water often spills over both piers and there is a risk of being swept out to sea.
The nearest bus stop, "Praia de Ourigo", is about 50 metres away and is crossed by line 202. The terminus of the historic tram lines 1 and 18 "Passeio Alegre" is about 200 meters from the pier.
