Rock formations in the sea
The main local attraction is several rock formations of volcanic origin that protrude from the sea very close to the shore.
The tallest of these, Ilheus da Janela, measures over 30 metres. The village lies in a narrow, cramped valley and its atmosphere is enhanced by the terraced fields and surrounding wooded cliffs dropping from heights of over 1,000 metres into the sea.
Levada da Ribeira da Janela
The village's hidden treasure is the nearly 13km long levada, which runs through wild wooded terrain along the mountainside, through tunnels and over bridges.
As is customary in Madeira, a hiking trail runs the entire length. The starting point is already in the municipality of Porto Moniz, high up on the Ribeira da Janela, and you can park your car conveniently.
The magical forest of Fanal
Less than 8 km up the ER209 road, climbing high into the mountains, you will find a magical place with a small plateau and an ancient laurel forest at an altitude of over 1,100 metres.
It lies right on what is usually a cloud border, making Fanal a popular destination for photographers. See the location details for more information.
