Akershus Fortress

Akershus Fortress

Akershus Fortress was built around 1300, and when you climb it, you will feel a somewhat medieval atmosphere.

Today, a significant part of the fortress is used by the army, but the outside of Akershus is still partly open to tourists and you can walk through the fortress from the Opera House to Aker Brygge.

From above, there is a truly magnificent view of the harbour and Aker Brygge.

Walk through the fortress

You can walk through the whole area on the many footpaths and alleys lined with former and current barracks.

All the buildings are beautifully landscaped and the historic character of the entire fortress is preserved.

Relax in an oasis of peace

Access to the buildings is mostly impossible, or at most to the smaller restaurants and cafes, but large parts of the public and outdoor areas of Akershus are accessible without restrictions.

The various courtyards and walls are made up of park-like areas with plenty of greenery and beautiful views.

Akershus is therefore one of the most popular relaxation areas in the centre of Oslo among locals and tourists alike.

Entrance fees and opening hours

All parts open to the public can be visited for free.

The gates of the fortress and all viewpoints open daily at 6:00 am and close at 9:00 pm.

The inner courtyard of the fortress is only open from 10:00-16:00.
