Monte Argentario is a large peninsula connected to the mainland by two very narrow natural isthmuses, plus a third artificial isthmus with a bridge from the town of Orbetello.
The peninsula is an extremely popular summer holiday destination, although it is relatively far from the nearest towns and airports.
Resorts and beaches
There are two main resorts on Monte Argenatrio.
- Porto Santo Stefano - the northern coast with ferry ports to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri
- Porto Ercole - east coast with a beautiful long beach and the fortress of Forte Filippo
Unlike most of the Tuscan coastline, Monte Argentario is very rugged with many small and often difficult to reach but all the more beautiful beaches.
You won't miss the long sandy beaches, though - these are especially found on the two spits that connect Monte Argentario to the mainland.
