Lovers of shopping and local markets will love Thessaloniki. The city centre is literally a shopping mall with many outdoor shops, large modern stores, as well as local markets.
The biggest one, with a distinct facade and quite a massive stone building, is the Modiano Market.
Local food and souvenirs
All your senses will be engaged at the Modiano Market. Hundreds of scents of different foods overwhelm the colourful images of handicrafts, souvenirs and spice stalls.
Far from being a tourist destination, Modiano is quite the opposite. The market has belonged to Thessaloniki since 1922 and is still mainly used by locals. Most of the area is occupied by endless stalls selling local food from fruit to fish to preserves and honey.
Admission and opening hours
Admission to the market is of course free, it is a regular public place.
It is open daily from 8:30 am. On Mondays and Wednesdays it closes at 14:30, while on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays it closes at 13:30, but reopens in the afternoon between 17:30 and 20:30. On Saturdays it is open all day without a lunch break, while on Sundays it closes completely.
