Find out where are the best locations for accommodation in Thessaloniki and tips on specific cheap or quality hotels.
Where to stay in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is a very large city stretching along more than 10km of coastline, but most of the interesting action takes place in a relatively small area around the historic centre and harbour, which is also where you'll find by far the largest number of accommodation options.
The downtown area between the main bus/train station and the White Tower is definitely the best choice for housing and is where you should primarily look.
The prices here are not that much higher (rather lower, thanks to a lot of competition) than on the outskirts of the city, and the convenience of having all the sights or shops within walking distance is definitely worth it.

Tips for the best hotels in Thessaloniki
If you don't want to spend time searching for the best deals, we've selected the best hotels for you in several categories.
Cheapest hotels
Thessaloniki is not an expensive city and even in the summer season you will have no problem staying in apartments from 29 eur per night, while smaller mainstream hotels with reception offer rooms from 40 eur per night for 2.
- Mandrino Hotel *** - The hotel with nice views of the city is located right on the main artery of Thessaloniki between the centre and the railway station.
- Nea Metropolis *** - simple clean hotel in a quieter shady street but at the same time only 10 minutes walk from the central promenade, we personally tried this hotel and the price vs quality ratio is really good
- Vergina Hotel *** - this hotel is ideal for early departures or late arrivals to Thessaloniki by bus or train as it is only a 3 minute walk from the central station
The golden mean
You will find virtually no well-known international chains like Ibis, Hilton and others in Thessaloniki, although there are exceptions. Generally the better quality 3 to 4* hotels offer a night in a 2 bed room at prices between 70 eur 92 eur .
- Holiday Inn Thessaloniki **** - One of the very few exceptions of the well-known chains has a hotel close to the central station and about 20 minutes walk to the centre
- City Hotel Thessaloniki **** - With very tasteful modern facilities and a location just 2 minutes from Aristotle Square, this hotel is without doubt one of the best value for money in Thessaloniki
- Egnatia Palace Hotel & Spa **** - this property boasts probably the most central location of all the hotels and all attractions can be reached within 20 minutes
Luxury hotels
You'd be hard pressed to find hotels in Thessaloniki with prices in excess of tens of thousands of crowns. You won't find many expensive luxury hotels here, and even the handful of great 5* hotels offer accommodation at really attractive prices from around 128 eur per night.
- ON Residence ***** - One of the best rated hotels ever will impress especially with its location right on the promenade, views of the harbour and stylish rooms
- Daios Luxury Living ***** - the second great hotel right on the promenade, this time closer to the White Tower, offers equally attractive prices and beautiful modern rooms
- Makedonia Palace ***** - is one of the largest hotels in Thessaloniki and has resort-like features. It's in a quiet location near the New Promenade, but you can walk to the centre in 15 minutes.
Thessaloniki hotel prices
Within Europe, Thessaloniki is one of the cheapest big cities. Even in the summer season, you won't have a problem finding a small but nice hotel with a fully furnished room in the centre for around 40 eur per night in a 2-bed room. Standard prices are in the range of 40 eur 73 eur .
However, it's true that prices in summer don't differ much from the rest of the year, which is due to the fact that Thessaloniki is not a typical beach resort, but at the same time it's not one of the top tourist spots either. Prices drop slightly perhaps only in February and March, when you'll also find rooms for under 37 eur per night.
