Porte d'Aix

Porte d'Aix is the name for Marseille's Arc de Triomphe, which resembles a scaled-down replica of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Marseille's Arc de Triomphe stands on Place Jules-Guesde, near the historic centre and the train station.

Monumental arch in antique style

The Porte d'Aix is architecturally very noble as it stands in the middle of a large square. It is built in the style of ancient triumphal arches, which had a great tradition in the days of Ancient Rome.

However, the Porte d'Aix was not built until 1839 during the reign of Louis Philippe I.

The triumphal arch commemorates the victorious campaign of the French armies against the Spanish during 1823.

The name refers to the location of the arch lying on the edge of the former city walls in the direction of the town of Aix-en-Provence.
