Notre-Dame de la Garde

Notre Dame de la Garde

The most famous symbol of Marseille is undoubtedly the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, which stands on a hill above the city. Many people confuse this basilica with La Major, the main cathedral by the harbour, although it is much smaller.

In terms of importance, however, it may even surpass the cathedral. Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica is also a popular tourist spot thanks to its great views, but it is also one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in the world.

The present basilica dates back to 1864, when it was consecrated. Its architecture reflects the Neo-Byzantine style with typical white limestone, green sandstone and grey marble cladding.

Why are there ship models hanging inside?

There was a church on top of the hill long before the present basilica from the 12th century. At that time, most of Marseille's inhabitants were connected to the sea in some way.

Sailors brought sacrificial offerings of ship parts and sunken wrecks to the church to gain protection over their voyages.

This pilgrimage tradition has survived to this day, which is why models of old and modern ships, planes and rescue helicopters hang from the basilica's ceiling, suspended from several ropes.

The golden statue as a lighthouse

A golden statue of the Virgin Mary, over 11 metres high, glitters at the top of the 41-metre-high bell tower.

In good weather, this statue acted as a kind of lighthouse for sailors. As soon as the sailors saw the glittering golden statue, they knew that home was near.

The view of Marseille

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde stands on a pointed hill, so there's nothing to obstruct views in all directions.

As the hill is the highest within the city centre, it definitely offers the best views of Marseille.

Entrance fees and opening hours

The basilica is open to the public every day from 7:00-18:00.

Entrance to the interior of the basilica and the crypt is free.

How to get there

The Church of Notre-Dame de la Garde may not be too far from the centre as the crow flies, but the hill up is very steep indeed.

However, you can get to the car park just below the basilica by taking the line 60 city bus from the city centre. The bus runs once every 10-15 minutes and the journey up from Vieux-Port takes about 17 minutes. You can find the timetable at rtm.fr/horaires.

Information about public transport and tickets is described in the Transport chapter.
