For Austrians, the Bugtheater is synonymous with the ultimate cultural experience and one of the national symbols.

The theatre was founded in 1741 at the instigation of Maria Theresa, still in an old building located a few dozen metres from the present Burgtheater. Several of Mozart's operas premiered here (The Marriage of Figaro and Abduction from the Seraglio).

In 1874, construction began on a new, much larger building, which was completed in 1888, in the beautiful classical style we know today.

The current scene

The Burgtheater is still an active stage for drama, opera and ballet and is undoubtedly Austria's most important theatre. Austria's most famous actors work here, and tickets for individual performances tend to sell out long in advance.

Due to the importance of the theatre, the most famous works of the past and present are performed here, every day except during the theatre holidays.

Tickets for performances

If you would like to attend any of the performances, purchase tickets ideally 2-3 months in advance online at the official website burgtheater.at. Ticket prices vary according to the performance and of course the specific seating. The cheapest cost around 20 eur, the most expensive also through 60 eur.
