Getting from Windhoek Airport

Namibia

There are no regular public transport buses to Hosea Kutako Airport.

The most convenient option for travelling around Namibia is definitely renting a car. However, taxis (from 350 nad) and shared vans (from 180 nad) also run to the city centre.

The journey to the centre of Windhoek takes about 40 minutes.

Rent a car

Several large car rental companies such as Avis, Hertz, Budget and Europcar are located in the arrivals hall.

Prices for a weekly rental are around 280 usd for a small car, respectively. 550 usd for an SUV (4x4).

Driving at night

Travelling by car in Namibia in the dark is very dangerous. Not because there is increased crime in the dark, but mainly because of the wildlife on the roads.

Most car rental companies have driving in the dark in their insurance exclusions. If you have an accident at night, you will not be covered by insurance.

However, for the trip between the airport and downtown Windhoek, most rental car companies do not apply this rule and the insurance will cover you for driving in the dark for this stretch. However, check with your rental company for the exact conditions.

Taxi and ridesharing apps

Official taxis are safe in Windhoek and foul play rarely occurs.

When you arrive, book a taxi at the counter in the arrivals hall. Payment is usually by cash only, however South African rand is often commonly accepted in addition to the Namibian dollar.

However, you can try to negotiate the price. Taxi drivers usually offer a ride to the city centre for 350 nad. It is virtually impossible to get a lower price than 300 nad.

The well-known mobile apps Uber, Bolt or Lyft do not work in Windhoek. However, you can use the local and very clear LEFA app. However, the availability of cars on the way from the airport is poor and prices are similar to taxis.

Shared shuttle vans

Shared vans are the cheapest way to get from the airport to downtown Windhoek.

The most frequent service is offered by Tok Tokkie Shuttle, which runs from downtown (stopping at Christ Church) to the airport about once an hour.

The cost per person when the van is occupied is 180 nad.
