There are two terminals at the airport. The airport buildings are large but very clear and the organisation of security and immigration checks is good.
The two buildings are only a 10-minute walk apart and are connected by a pedestrian tunnel or a free shuttle bus. However, walking is faster, even when travelling with large luggage.
Which terminal?
The terminals are differentiated by airline and, unlike in the past, all flights of one airline are always only at one terminal.

Transfer between flights
What procedures do you expect when connecting at Pudong Airport?
When transferring, do not change terminal
Intra-terminal transfers are seamless and do not have to be based out of the transit area.
What checks do I go through when I transfer?
Even when transferring from an international to a domestic flight, you do not have to come out completely, but after passing through immigration, you will go through a special corridor through security to the departure gate area.
- International -> International: security check
- International -> domestic: immigration and security check
- Domestic -> international: immigration and security check
- Domestic -> domestic: no security check, you get off the plane directly into the departure gate area
Do I have to leave the transit zone?
If you have luggage all the way to your destination or are travelling with hand luggage only, you do not need to leave the transit area.
Do I have to collect my luggage?
If both flights are booked on the same reservation and you have less than 24 hours to transfer, you do not need to collect your baggage, even when transferring from an international to a domestic flight.
Do I need a visa for China?
You do not need to arrange a visa for China for an international transfer.
Transfer between terminals
When transferring from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, you must always exit the building and walk down a short corridor within 10 minutes to the other building.
You can also use the free transit bus, but it takes longer than the walking distance.
You cannot transfer between terminals on the airside.
Visa-free entry for transfers within 144 hours
Many airlines also offer long layovers of several days.
Shanghai-Pudong Airport is included in the Visa Waiver Programme for up to a maximum of 144 hours.
Upon arrival, before going through immigration, look for the special counter where these visa-free entries are processed.
Please note that if you cross within 24 hours, the official may refuse to issue a visa-free entry permit and you will therefore have to spend time in the transit zone.
For transfers over 24 hours, visa-free entry permits are always issued without any problems. However, you need to present your flight ticket from China and your accommodation reservation.
Last week's experience regarding visa-free entry to China. I had a layover in Shanghai for about 10 hours. Before arriving at the actual passport control where you can apply for a "temporary entry permit" (144/24 hrs) you need to be fingerprinted at a self-service kiosk. The whole process is very simple, the kiosk can be switched to English and the whole thing took about a minute. Before landing at PVG, the flight attendants on the plane (specifically China Eastern Airlines) handed out arrival cards, which were then turned in at passport control. At passport control, you then just hand in your passport, a receipt from the fingerprint kiosk, and your arrival card. I also immediately presented my boarding pass for the next flight, which was 4:55pm that same day. Immigration just confirmed with me if I was then continuing on that same day and that was it. I received my passport sticker and was done. The whole journey from the plane to the arrivals hall took about 30-40 minutes (it was around 7:00am) and there was no queue anywhere. If you have a trip through Shanghai and a layover of at least 8 hours, I definitely recommend visiting the city center. Downtown isn't that big and you can manage to see something in that time 😀 .
Thanks for the comment, I'm going through the same thing.
Did you have to pick up your checked bags?
I'm flying from Naha (Okinawa) with a 10hr layover in Shanghai, both flights are on the same ticket from the same China Easter Airlines.
I would probably modify the previous information. The fingerprints that you have to take... we didn't get past the first step of it, which is that it didn't take our fingerprints and immediately printed out a paper. So don't even bother if it doesn't work... it's just the paper that counts. The immigration papers they hand out on the plane... they don't have to hand them out for temporary entry, but the kind they give out for entry into China. If they don't say temporary entry, you just throw them away and pick up the right ones at immigration... they're on the desk. Important: Bring pens... they're not on site. We had a 40min queue, depending on how you catch the next planes... you won't mess anything up if you take a faster route to immigration... oh and beware, it can take 10min to get to immigration and walk 700m... it's big. Probably important... personal experience about 2 days old and we flew with China Eastern and from Okinawa to Shanghai. Check-in at Naha airport opens 2 hours before departure and it's slow. And then security... same thing. It's recommended to be in Naha 2.5h before departure and stay there for 30min before the check-in opens. There is no Family Mart or 7-11 behind security, so buy food before. Maglev from the airport to the city centre currently 54RMB one way. If you buy tickets with lower value than needed when transferring to the metro = you make a mistake, you can pay the extra at the station where you get off. There is usually a booth at the turnstile where someone sits.
