Most travelers go to Punta Cana with a travel agency, where they have a pre-arranged transfer to the hotel as part of the tour. Individual travellers can take taxis, public transport or simply rent a car at the airport.
Transfer from a travel agency
After passing through immigration control, look for your delegate with your travel agent's badge who will take you to a bus directly to your resort.
If there is no delegate, simply follow your nose at all times and walk through the lobby until you reach the outdoor parking lot, where you will see a small kiosk in the distance with many travel agency logos and flags. Here a delegate will be waiting for you.
Taxi, Uber
Taxis are the most common form of transport. Upon arrival, there is a single stand in the arrivals area of the hall with a sign saying "Taxi", where you can order a taxi for a pre-arranged price.
We recommend that you arrange your taxi at the counter, where you can at least be sure that you are travelling with a licensed taxi driver. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting into a car with someone pretending to be a taxi driver and ending up paying multiples of the normal fare. In this case, you can at least stick to the prices listed after you exit the airport concourse.
Regular taxis can only ever be paid for in cash.
Best beach resorts - Punta Cana
An alternative is to use the Uber mobile app, which works reliably in Punta Cana. Average prices from/to the airport are as follows:
- Playa Bávaro - 1 300 DOP
- Uvero Alto - 2 ,000 DOP
- Cabeza de Toro - 1 000 DOP
- Cap Cana - 900 DOP
- Bayahíbe - 3 800 DOP
Pre-arranged transfer
A very popular option is to arrange a transfer from the airport in advance.
The transport company counters are still in the arrivals hall, so you don't have to go out and expose yourself to offers from taxi drivers.
If you're staying at a large resort, the hotel will often offer its own transfer service.
Alternatively, you can use one of the many companies. Generally the cheapest transport is provided by Diamond Transfers.
Prices are quoted for a full van with a capacity of up to 5 people.
- Playa Bávaro - 35 usd
- Uvero Alto - 60 usd
- Cap Cana - 30 usd
- Bayahíbe - 90 usd
Car Hire
If you're travelling around the Dominican Republic on your own, your best option is to rent a car.
Prices for a week in high season start at 370 usd. We strongly recommend avoiding Goldcar.

Public transport
Regular bus services in Punta Cana do not operate like in developed cities in Europe or North America.
Public transport is provided by large vans for about 20 to 35 people called guaguas.
The "guaguas" station is not directly in front of the terminal, but on the main street "Blvd. Turístico del Este" (location on Google Maps).
Guaguas run from the airport to Cruce de Verón, where you can change to other lines towards Playa Bávaro. The journey to Cruce de Verón takes about 25 minutes and then to Playa Bávaro another 35 minutes.
The buses are not marked with the line number, always ask the driver what destination it is going to.
Pay your ticket inside the bus (cash only) to the conductor, who will find you himself. The fare from the airport to Cruce de Verón is 100 dop. Further to Playa Bávaro you pay another 150 dop.
