Getting from Puerto Plata Airport

Puerto Plata

There are no buses or other forms of public transport to the Puerto Plata Airport terminal.

You can only use taxis, Uber or car rental services.

Car rental

Hire a car if you're heading straight from the airport on a road-trip around the Dominican Republic.

The terminal is home to a large number of well-known international rental companies. Prices for a week in high season are around 270 usd per week.

The car rental counters are right in the arrivals hall.

Transfer from the travel agency

Once through immigration control, look for your delegate with your travel agent's badge who will take you to a bus directly to your resort.

If there is no delegate, simply follow your nose at all times and walk through the lobby until you reach the outdoor parking lot, where you will see a small kiosk in the distance with many travel agency logos and flags. Here a delegate will be waiting for you.

Taxi

At the main exit from the arrivals hall is the official taxi rank, of which there are plenty at the airport at all hours of the day or night.

Unofficial taxi drivers may also try to approach you in the arrivals hall, but will usually offer less favourable prices.

Official taxis have a flat rate and prices are very high. Taxi drivers commonly accept payment in US dollars, or even prefer it. Payment can only be made in cash.

  • Puerto Plata (downtown) - 30 usd
  • Playa Dorada - 30 usd
  • Cofresi - 45 usd
  • Sosúa - 25 usd
  • Cabarete - 30 usd
  • Luperón - 90 usd

Uber

The Uber mobile app works well in Puerto Plata, usually offering a significantly lower price than regular taxis.

The average price to downtown Puerto Plata is around 350 dop, which is roughly 6 usd.

When choosing a payment method, we recommend choosing cash. Uber driver in the Dominican Republic often refuse rides with card payment.

Public transportation

There are no buses or other public transportation to the terminal.

Public minibuses run between Sosúa and Puerto Plata along a 700-metre road. The ticket price is 130 dop and is payable in cash only to the conductor inside the bus.

This mode of transport is only suitable for travellers without luggage (there is very little space in the minibus) and with plenty of time.

The frequency is very irregular and buses run on average 1-2 times per hour.
