The airport is relatively accessible by bus and tram, although neither line stops directly outside the terminal.

Bus

The nearest bus stop, Essendon Fields/English Street, is located 240 metres from the terminal and the route along the footpath to it is clearly signposted (see map).

The 477 line runs through the station and goes to Essendon (20 minutes' drive) or Moonee Ponds (30 minutes' drive) railway stations, from where you can take the yellow Craigieburn Line to Melbourne city centre.

Northbound Line 477 runs to Airport-West Shopping Centre and Broadmeadows Station.

Line 477 runs once every 30 minutes on weekdays and once every 40 to 60 minutes on weekends.

Tram

The Earl St/Matthews Ave tram stop is 700 metres from the terminal (see map).

Line 59 runs without a transfer to Melbourne city centre at Flinders Street station, but journey times are over 50 minutes and it's quicker to get to the city centre by changing at Essendon station for the yellow Craigieburn Line train.

Car rental

There are several car rental counters right in the terminal.

Prices here are slightly higher than renting at nearby Melbourne Central Airport.

However, one-way rental is a good deal if you pick up your car in the city centre or at Melbourne MEL Airport and return it at Essendon Fields Airport or vice versa.
