City Airport is popular for its proximity to central London.
Docklands Light Railway
The most efficient transport to London and the City is the automatic Docklands Light Railway (DLR). There are direct links to the financial district, central London (Bank station) and Stratford.
Official information and a link finder can be found on the transport company's website: tfl.gov.uk
City Airport is in fare zone 3, so fares to the city centre are as follows:
- 3,70 gbp - contactless card payment at the turnstile (higher price applies weekdays 6:30-9:30)
- 3 gbp - contactless card payment at the turnstile
- 6,70 gbp - cash payment at the ticket machine
- 9,60 gbp - all-day limit for zones 1-3 (more than that will never be cut off when paying by card)
At Bank terminus you can change to several London Underground lines in all directions.
- Journeytime to Bank: 21 minutes
- Frequency: 10 minutes
- First Tube from Bank: 5:32am (Monday-Saturday), 7:02am (Sunday)
- Last Tube from the airport: 0:16
Buses
In addition to DLR, the airport is served by bus number to the surrounding neighborhoods.
- Route 473 - Stratford, Plaistow and North Woolwich
- Route 474 - Canning Town, Manor Park and East Ham
Tickets are paid by contactless payment card by attaching it to a reader inside the bus.
Bus journeys are also subject to daily limits, which for zones 1-3 are 9,60 gbp.
A short bus journey of up to 60 minutes costs 1,75 gbp.
Taxi
Taxis to central London cost around 40 gbp.
Slightly lower prices are offered by the very popular London apps Uber and Bolt.
Rent a car
If London Airport serves as a starting point for you to travel around the English countryside, then renting a car is definitely the best option. There are dozens of car rental companies at the airport, which you can compare and book at rentalcars.com, for example.
Prices range from 180 gbp to 250 gbp per week, depending on the size of the car or the rental company you choose.
If you're only heading into central London, definitely don't rent a car.
