Transfer at Izmir Airport

Izmir

Izmir Airport is a very neat complex of two terminals, but they are connected into one building about 400 metres long.

  • International - the slightly smaller but modern building is on the left when viewed from the outside. The terminal is very spacious and uncluttered.
  • Domestic - the older and larger building occupies the section on the right and this terminal is also clear and spacious. Domestic traffic is denser than international traffic and therefore there can be longer queues for security checks (up to 35 minutes).

In general, Izmir Airport can be classified as a medium-sized airport.

Security and passport control

We recommend that you adhere to the recommended times and actually arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure. You will go through two security checks.

The first check is when you enter the building, when your luggage is scanned and you also have to show your ticket. So have your ticket ready on your mobile phone or on paper in advance to avoid delays in the queue. The first security check is usually quick and you will usually be delayed no more than 10 minutes.

A traditional security check usually takes 15-30 minutes.

For international departures, you will also have to go through passport control, but there are no queues longer than 15 minutes at departure.

On the other hand, upon arrival in Izmir, you may spend up to 45 minutes in line at passport control.

Transfer between flights

Izmir Airport is not as important a transfer point as Istanbul IST or Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen SAW, but even so, SunExpress in particular often offers guaranteed transfers in Izmir.

International <-> Domestic

If you arrive in Izmir from abroad and continue your flight through Turkey, your luggage may be transferred automatically.

However, you must go through passport control and then security to the domestic terminal or vice versa.

International <-> International

If you are transferring via Izmir from and to a foreign country, you go through a special security check, however you do not have to leave the transit zone and do not go through passport control.
