Transfer at Chongqing Airport

Chongqing

The airport currently uses 2 terminals for the public and a third is under construction. Terminal 1 is for private flights only.

Terminal 2 is formally divided into sections A and B, but both are located in one building.

The airport area is large and all terminals are separate buildings not connected by any corridor.

Transfer between flights

Chongqing is a major domestic transfer hub, and international transfers are also frequently made here.

Most guaranteed transfers (i.e. you have all flights on one ticket) take place within one terminal only.

The exceptions are domestic to international transfers (or vice versa) on Sichuan Airlines and China Express Airlines, where you have to move between terminals 2 and 3.

A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals on the tarmac from approximately 5:30 to 22:00 with a frequency of 15-30 minutes. There are no airport shuttle buses in the public area, but you can use the metro line.

International <-> International

For purely international transfers, you do not need to leave the transit area or go through passport control.

When you exit the aircraft, follow the "International Transfer" signs to security, after which you will be directly in the departure gate area.

  • Average transfer time - 30-50 minutes
  • Transfer baggage - will be transferred automatically

In case of a long transfer, you can go for a city visit. This is because you can enjoy visa-free entry for up to 144 hours, during which time you must not leave the Chongqing city area.

International - domestic - international

Some airlines offer international transfers with two change points in China.

For example, you can purchase Budapest - Chongqing - Beijing - Sydney, Milan - Chongqing - Haikou - Auckland, etc. on one booking.

In this case, you also do not need a visa for China, but there must be no more than 24 hours between your first arrival in China (i.e. at Chongqing airport) and your departure from China.

Domestic <-> Domestic

Transferring between two flights within China is very simple.

You exit the plane into a special corridor, at the end of which you head either to the gate or to a transfer area with a special security checkpoint for transfer passengers.

  • Average transfer time - 30-50 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically

International <-> Domestic

In this case, you always have to go through immigration control just at Chongqing Airport.

In both directions, you need to leave the transit zone, pick up your luggage, check in again and go through security.

  • Average transfer time - 75-120 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - you must pick up
