The large Tianfu International Airport is the main entry point for China's Sichuan Province and the city of Chengdu, 70 km away.
The airport was opened in 2021 to relieve the Shuangliu CTUwhich is much closer to the city and therefore has limited development opportunities due to surrounding construction.
At present, Tianfu Airport is served by almost all international flights to Chengdu, supplemented by a large number of domestic flights within China. However, for domestic traffic, the still operational airport remains more popular. Shuangliu CTU due to its proximity to the city centre.
Sichuan Airlines, Air China, Chengdu Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have one of their main bases at Tianfu Airport.
Direct international flights from Chengdu go to many destinations in Southeast Asia, Korea and Japan, but direct routes also go to Frankfurt, London, Milan, Moscow, Rome, Addis Ababa, Vienna, Dubai, Doha, Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, Vancouver and Los Angeles.
