Transfer at Canberra Airport

Canberra

Canberra Airport uses one medium-sized terminal.

There is an arrivals area on the ground floor and check-in counters on the first floor, as well as a common security checkpoint for all flights.

Once through security, you'll find yourself in the transit area for domestic flights, with a passport control corridor leading to departure gate 5, which serves international flights.

Once an international flight arrives, immigration control is usually very quick and efficient and for travellers from most countries around the world, simply retrieve your passport at the automated kiosk. Queues usually reach 5-10 minutes.

Transfer between flights

Canberra is not a typical transfer airport, but some companies can offer guaranteed transfers here.

If you have more than one choice of connecting in Canberra, always choose this airport over the larger airports in Sydney or Melbourne.

This is because the local airport is very convenient and walking distances are no more than 5 minutes.

International <-> International

If you are arriving from another country and continuing on to another country (for example Doha - Canberra - Hobart), you do not need to leave the transit zone at all and therefore do not need to process an electronic permit to enter Australia.

When you get off the plane, follow the signs "International Transit", which will lead you to the transit counters (which you will only visit if you do not already have a connecting boarding pass) and security check.

  • Average transfer time - 10 to 25 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically
  • Security check - yes
  • Immigration check / visa required - no

International -> Domestic

Upon arrival, you must go through immigration, collect your luggage, go through customs and exit to the public area.

Queues for immigration control are usually between 5 and 15 minutes.

You then proceed to the departure level to check in for your domestic flight.

  • Average transfer time - 20 to 35 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - you must collect and re-check in
  • Security check - yes
  • Immigration check / visa required - yes

Once off the plane, follow the signs "International Transit", which will lead you to departure gate 5. You do not need to leave the transit area at all.

You will then proceed to immigration control, after which you will be at departure gate 5.

  • Baggage on transfer - it will be transferred automatically
  • Security check - no

National <-> National

You don't have to leave the transit area at all as you get off the plane straight into the departure gate area.

  • Average transfer time - 2 to 5 minutes
  • Baggage on transfer - will be transferred automatically
  • Security check - no

If you were to make a transfer on your own and had to change terminals, then you would need to exit the transit area, check in again and go through security to the departure gates.

Overnight in the terminal - opening hours

The public area of the airport is open from 4:15-23:30.

The airport closes completely overnight and it is not possible to stay overnight in the terminal.

Hotels near the airport

For long layovers or before an early morning flight, stay conveniently near the airport.

Vibe Hotel Canberra **** is about a 3-minute walk from the terminal along a marked walkway .
